He figured he’d carry her back once she fell asleep. If not, with the way she tossed and turned, he’d never get a peaceful night.
The next morning, Charlotte woke up in her own room. Sunlight poured through the window, and for a moment, everything felt right. She made her way to her desk, flopped into her chair, and opened the H3N1 experiment report Jackson had sent over. Thirty pages, all crammed with technical jargon.
Charlotte sighed, frowning as she scrolled through the report with her left hand. It only took a quick scan for her to find the problem. The H3N1 experiments kept failing because they were missing a key ingredient called B20. It was rare, specific to a certain region, and impossible to find in Eldoria’s market. No one even knew exactly what B20 was made of. The institute had tried all kinds of substitutes based on what little info they had, but nothing worked.
If she wanted the research to succeed, she needed to track down B20.
Charlotte pressed her lips together, fingers flying over the keyboard. After some quick code, a new page popped up on the screen with details about B20. Turns out, it only existed in Apex, and a secret underground medical group had the whole supply locked down. Getting it wouldn’t be easy.
The H3N1 project had already eaten up a ton of money. If it got shut down now, the loss would be huge. The research was so close to a breakthrough, with endless possibilities for medicine. She wasn’t about to give up.
She closed the page and opened another email. This one had profiles of people searching for Asclepius-one of them was based in Apex.

classroom, backpack slung over one

“Charlotte, your hand is taking forever to heal!”
Charlotte glanced at her hand and shrugged. “It’s fine.” Honestly, it didn’t matter to her whether it worked or not.
“How can it be fine?” Shirley looked ready to cry, her eyes red and watery. “The exam’s tomorrow. How are you going to take it like this?”
Andrew and Parrish wandered over, exchanged a look, and shook their heads.
“Charlotte, this exam is super important,” Andrew said. “If you do well, you get straight into university. If you mess up and don’t hit the passing grade, you cant even the main entrance exams.”
Andrew looked exhausted, dark circles under his eyes from a night spent studying.
He yawned, but there was real concern in his voice. Even he knew this was serious.
