“You actually do homework?” Anthony squeezed her hand and let out a surprised laugh.
Was he making fun of her? Charlotte slowed down, lifted her chin, and shot him an annoyed glare. “I’m doing you a favor. You should be grateful.”
Anthony just smiled, that kind of helpless, spoiled smile he saved just for her. Sometimes he wondered if he had a girlfriend or if he’d accidentally adopted a little princess whose mission in life was to keep him on his toes.
Andrew, who had been totally ignored, slipped into the car and claimed the farthest corner seat. He listened to their banter, his jaw practically on the floor. Wait a second. Had Anthony really been doing Charlotte’s homework all this time? And he actually seemed to like it? Why would Anthony happily help Charlotte with her work but always come down so hard on him? That was seriously unfair.
As Charlotte stepped into the car, she spotted Andrew and raised her voice just enough. “You’re sitting in the middle?”
“Huh? No, I’m good here.” Andrew caught the teasing look on her face and shrank back even more. “Charlotte, you should sit by Anthony,” he said quickly, hoping to avoid the hot seat. If he ended up next to Anthony, and grades came up, he’d probably get chewed out right there on the spot. He never escaped Anthony’s lectures after an exam, and riding in the same car as the country’s top student was just asking for trouble. The comparison would make things so much worse.
“No, you take the middle,” Charlotte said, arching her brow. “Didn’t you text Anthony about me a few times? Now you can report to him face-to-face.”
Andrew felt like he might split in half. She knew about that? “Charlotte, it’s not what you think he whined, tugging at her sleeve like a lost puppy. “I’m sorry, please, help me out.”
Before he could say anything else, Anthony smacked his hand away and pulled Charlotte right next to him. He shot Andrew a dark look. “Sit back where you were and stay there.”
Andrew pulled his hand back immediately. Meanwhile, Anthony pulled out a fresh package of snacks, opened them up, and handed them to Charlotte, his voice gentle. “Try these, see if you like them.”
“Mm.” Charlotte barely looked up from her phone, just opened her mouth and waited for Anthony to feed her, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“You didn’t do well on your exams?” Anthony asked, his tone suddenly ice cold as he glanced at Andrew.
“Yeah,” Andrew admitted, looking
down. The smell of cookies made his stomach twist with hunger. The only thing he’d ever “eaten” in Anthony’s car was a punch. Now he’d been called out by Charlotte and forced to watch this sweet couple moment. Life was brutal.
“For the next two months, your weekends are canceled. You’ll be coming in for extra tutoring.” Anthony’s voice was still cold, but His hands were gentle as he wiped the crumbs from the corner of Charlotte’s mouth.
“Not even weekends? Come on Andrew started to argue, but then caught the look in Anthony’s eyes and immediately backed down. “Well, Can I at least come over to your place? Maybe Charlotte can help tutor me?” At least then he wouldn’t be bored.
Anthony’s eyes narrowed, looking more dangerous by the second. Andrew already clung to Charlotte at school. Now he wanted to join her on weekends too? “With your brain, even she can’t save you.”
He looked down and saw Charlotte totally absorbed in a video on her phone. The guy on the screen was kissing a girl, and Charlotte looked like she couldn’t look away. Anthony just stared at her, speechless.
