The word “fiancé” hit Melissa like a slap, leaving her completely stunned. She just stood there, unable to say a single word.
Rebecca noticed the look on Melissa’s face and immediately stepped in. “Charlotte, Melissa was just trying to help you,” she said, her voice sharp. “You don’t have to act so ungrateful.”
Charlotte’s eyebrows lifted, but before she could say anything, Anthony’s deep voice filled the room. “Who exactly do you think you’re talking to?”
Both Rebecca and Melissa glanced up, meeting Anthony’s icy stare. Their hearts skipped a beat. Melissa was left in shock, unable to believe what she was seeing. After all these years, she’d never seen Anthony stand up for any woman like this. He must really care about Charlotte.

Charlotte stood tall, hands stuffed casually in her pockets. Even in her relaxed clothes, her cold voice and calm confidence made her impossible to ignore.
Melissa’s smile faltered. She glanced over at Anthony, looking for support. But he was just watching Charlotte, his eyes soft with affection, clearly planning to let Charlotte handle things her own way.
What is this? Does she really want Rebecca to apologize? Does she think she can do whatever she wants just because Anthony’s on her side?
“Oh, come on it’s all just a misunderstanding.” Dorothy quickly walked over and slipped her arm

Charlotte up and down. Fora moment, Dorothy paused. There was something strangely familiar about this girl, even though she couldn’t quite place it.
“Anthony, Ms. Carter already said it wasn’t on purpose. Isn’t your girlfriend being a little too much right now?” Dorothy asked, her tone gentle but pointed.
Dorothy and Melissa’s mom had been best friends for years. They’d always planned for Melissa and Anthony to end up together. Everything was supposed to go smoothly. But then Charlotte showed up out of nowhere.
Charlotte had even met Patricia already and somehow wrapped her around her finger. Dorothy wasn’t surprised. Older people were easy to win over, especially by girls from ordinary families hoping
o marry into high society. But Anthony’s parents were back now. There was no way they’d let their son marry someone like Charlotte.
“Mom, what are you saying?” Andrew stepped forward, his voice protective. “They
started it. You can’t blame Charlotte for standing up for herself.”
“You don’t understand anything,” Dorothy shot back, glaring at him. She turned back to Anthony. “I’m just trying to help. This is your grandmother’s birthday party t would be awful if someone with no manners ruined it

A clear, confident voice rang out from the entrance.
Heads turned. Lavinia walked in, her lavender mermaid gown shimmering, hair swept up, arm linked with Matthew’s. She smiled gracefully as she entered the hall.
Anthony’s parents were back. Melissa’s heart leapt with hope. She remembered how well they’d always treated her. There was no way Matthew and Lavinia would let Anthony end up with a girl like Charlotte.
