“Charlotte!” Andrew and Parrish called out, stretching their necks to get her attention.
She glanced back at the two boys, both of them already way more tanned than before. Charlotte frowned. She’d have to remember to bring them some sunscreen next time.
“Stop staring around. Stand up straight.”
Before she could even turn back, a sharp, icy voice sliced through the air. Charlotte slowly faced forward, lifting her eyes to meet the cold, intimidating gaze of her instructor, Cotton.
“What are you looking at? Yes, I mean you.”
Really? He was picking on her?
Charlotte narrowed her clear eyes, glancing at the other groups and students nearby. There were still a few minutes before training started, and students were still wandering over, not even in line yet. Everyone was looking around, but somehow Cotton had decided she was the problem.

“Did I say you could talk?” Cotton barked. His hands were behind his back, his face set in a severe scowl. “Feet together. Chest out. Head up. Stand straight.”
This was exactly the kind of student he thought needed discipline.
His voice was so loud and harsh that the girls nearby snapped to attention, clamming up instantly like startled deer. No wonder he was a special forces guy. Even his yelling could freeze the room. He was terrifying.

With so many students, everyone got a number for training. Charlotte was number 91.
She was already standing pretty straight, but she lifted her chin a little, meeting Cotton’s eyes, lips pressed together.

Cotton hadn’t expected that. She
looked young but her presence was
strong.

For a second, Cotton had no
comeback. Clearly, she wasn’t just a troublemaker, she was quick with her words too. A girl like her
probably never had a tasteinet
of real
discipline. He’d have to show her
what rules meant.
“Don’t get clever with me,” Cotton said in a low, steady voice. “Here, only one thing matters. If you fall behind, you get punished.”
He gave Charlotte another look.
Today’s training was a long march. She looked so delicate, he could already picture her struggling after a few miles. Maybe she’d even cry.
He shot her a look that pretty much said, Good luck, and walked away.
Charlotte pressed her lips together, not saying a word.
So he wanted to target her? Fine. She was actually curious to see just how tough
this special forces instructor from The White Whale really was.
