Chapter 661
The list for the academic exchange came out faster than anyone expected. Other than Charlotte, every name on it belonged to a guy.
The girls in class all glanced at Charlotte with a mix of sympathy and worry. For the first time, they wondered if being at the top of the class was really worth it.
“I mean, I thought I was ready, but if you told me to dissect one of those adorable little white mice right now, I’d probably faint.”
“Charlotte looks so soft and delicate. She’s going to be scared out of her mind.”
After the announcement, Charlotte and the four guys were called to the professor’s office. While they waited, Charlotte kept her head down, scrolling and typing on her phone. She looked deep in conversation with someone.
The four guys couldn’t help but sneak glances at her. Out of everyone they’d ever met, Charlotte was by far the prettiest. She had this fresh, graceful vibe that made her stand out without even trying.
“Charlotte, if you’re nervous, I can help,” Beasley said, stepping forward. He was one of the four and, judging by Charlotte’s pale face, assumed she needed some reassurance.
“Huh?” Charlotte had just sent a message to Anthony and looked up, catching Beasley’s eye. Her mind flashed back to the last time Anthony got jealous. That was a pain she was not eager to repeat.
“It’s fine, but thanks,” Charlotte replied, her voice cool and distant.
Beasley’s smile faded. He looked confused, like he couldn’t quite figure her out. Was she not scared at all?
Just then, Glenn, their anatomy professor and the head of their department; walked in. He was in his sixties, with a reputation for being completely devoted to traditional medicine. He’d never marred choosing instead to dedicate every bit of himself to advancing his field.
Most people didn’t really believe in traditional medicine, especially at a place like Kingswood University. The school’s equipment was old, and a lot of research just couldn’t be done For traditional medicine to really thrive, someone would have to pour money into it without worrying about the cost. But in a world where modern medicine was king, that kind of investment felt impossible.
“Good morning, Professor Glenn,” the five of them greeted him politely.
“Good morning to you all.” Glenn set down his bread and briefcase. He paused, then turned around as if he’d just remembered something. His eyes scanned the group, finally resting on Charlotte. He seemed surprised for a second, then smiled.
“Charlotte, you’re this year’s top student?”
“Yes, sir.” Charlotte nodded, respectful and calm.
She’d heard plenty about Professor Glenn. He’d given his entire life savings to Kingswood’s medical department, all to support traditional medicine. Even now, when he could have retired, he kept working, training wave after wave of new doctors.
Charlotte couldn’t help but feel a deep respect for him.
“I’ve always wondered,” Glenn said, pushing his glasses up and looking curious. “With your grades, you could have gone to any top university in Eldoria. Why pick Kingswood? And why traditional medicine?”
Traditional medicine wasn’t exactly the hottest major at Kingswood. The other guy’s turned to look at
Charlotte, eyes wide. They were just as curious. For them, maybe the best thing about coming to this School was getting to be in the samË class as her.
