Chapter 12

I had to let her sleep in the darkness.  I needed to see where we were.  The moon goddess herself sent me to her.  I was meant to come like the others when they turned twelve, but the moon goddess told me I had to stay behind as she wasn’t ready. I had to wait for a few years, but the moon goddess gave me two gifts; I could watch her life unfold and mask my scent.  I watched as she grew up, but the goddess kept telling me no, every time I asked when I was to appear to her. But I was met with the same answer; I had to wait.  I watched everything within the deeps of her mind.  I had to watch the whole thing when her mother left her, and in the care of her father, I had to watch my human break and become a broken shell. She never recovered from it, but she is one strong cookie; she knows how to look after herself.  The night in question, her argument with her father about seeing her mother again, she was hellbent on not going or doing anything to save whatever she had left with her mum, and I have to admit, I have watched this human tear apart her heart because she believed her mother never loved her. It all happened so fast, but I could sense everything about to  happen in slow motion; that night wasn’t meant to happen; I had to surface. Even the goddess told me not to, she was in trouble, and I needed to protect her.  When she was knocked out cold, I took the chance and moved forward. That wolf would have killed her like he killed her father. I opened my eyes and watched as he slit her father’s throat. His eyes were amusing when he went to me as he never thought she had me. But I proved him wrong; his eyes glowed yellow, but I could feel her stir, so I had to move quickly and kill him.  I moved back in time and went further into the deep darkness of her mind.  The moon goddess was proud but told me I needed to stay back. There was more to this story with the wolf, but she couldn’t tell me anything as she never gets involved in her children’s business.  I knew I couldn’t tell her what I heard.  I listened to everything that wolf said to her father; he owed someone money, but it wasn’t the wolf; it was someone else.  I knew I had to protect my human, and I will always protect her.  The dreams of the wolf, I had to let her settle; she needed to rest. I know she hasn’t slept much, which was on me. I had to send her into the back of her mind.  I needed to come forward and soon.  I know everyone will be shocked, but it would be worth it.  But knowing our mate is here, I need to be there.  I needed to see him.  I needed to be with him.  I know I had my work cut for me with my human. She’s going to be a hard nut to crack. I have seen her old boyfriends, and some were hard to stomach. I was so glad I wasn’t around, or I would have kicked their asses into the ground. I lived for the thought of ripping their throats out, especially when she was with them.  I opened my eyes and looked around.  No one was in the room.  No sign of her mum.  I knew my human’s anger toward her mum was intense, but I never thought she would be like that, but she was right to be angry with her.  Her mum leaving took a toll on my human, and she had a lot of built-up frustration when it came to her. She needed to let out.  Knowing she wanted to leave this pack was hard to stomach  as I wanted to be here, but she didn’t even know about our kind or the fact we have a mate here.  I could sense him around.  The moon goddess gave us the gift of masking out scent when she told me to hold back.  She would have felt sparks, but due to the masking of our scent, nothing would come through, not even tingles, but his scent hit me hard. I wanted to come forward and let him claim us, but I had to calm myself.  I know I have to go further back into her mind once again, but my human needed to sleep.  The thought of everything that happened to my human and what she went through over the years, I had to feel her suffering. But there were always some happy moments, especially when it came to that other human girl she bothered with; they were close.  I have to admit; I admired how the human friend and her mum tried to rally around her after her father’s death and even to take her in.  The way everything worked out was heart-wrenching to see. I watched on as her mother, mate, and the mother’s brother declared that they had to take her right there and then.  I was angry with them.  As a wolf, every little threat toward you or your human should be dealt with, but I couldn’t surface, not yet.  I knew I was causing her headaches. Being further back in her head was okay for the time, especially when she was young, but not when your human was a teenager. Their minds are everywhere, and the hormones don’t get me started on them.  I had often wanted to come forward and be there for her, but when the moon goddess tells you no, you have to obey. She was our mother, and she knew what was best.  I could hear movement outside.  I was about to close my eyes when his scent came.  Our mate was outside the door.  I could feel my heart leap but sink simultaneously when I remembered that I wasn’t to come forward just yet.  I wanted to see what he looked like and who he was.  My head was throwing every possibility around, but I knew I would meet him soon.  The scent ignited my insides, but I couldn’t tell him I was here.  I let out a slow sigh and closed my eyes.  I pushed my human back to the surface, but I stayed close.  I knew I had to keep the dream away from her, only for the time being.  I stayed close, but not too close, to know she was a werewolf.  I masked our scent as I heard the door open.  I knew it was our mate; his scent was strong.  I knew I had to go back, but something ignited when a strong hand touched ours. The mate bond is working between us, even though he will feel it. He wouldn’t believe we will too.  I couldn’t help but close my eyes and sniff the air.  His scent was hard to bear, but I could work out what he was and was shocked.  He was an alpha.  Our mate was the alpha of the pack.  My heart scored more, but as his hand left my humans, I felt lost without the touch.  I sighed.  I moved toward the back of my human mind, where she couldn’t find me.  It won’t be long, Leah, I thought. Your life is going to change for the better.  I moved back into the darkness and lay down, resting my head on my front paws.  Moon Goddess told me she would come forward to tell me when to reveal myself.  I have to wait in the darkness till she does.  I knew I had to tell her what we were, but how would I reveal who and what we were to her?  I hope someone does, or it will get complicated for me.  I let my eyes close, and I needed to let my human rest more.
