Chapter 13
A mind link opened up from Cassie, telling me that Leah was awake. I was in the office working, but as soon as she mentioned Leah, I felt my heart burst. Lynx was happy to hear she was awake and bugging me to see her. We went to the hospital, but I could hear the whole conversation with Jenny as I approached. The anger that came from her was hard to bear; she was clearly pissed with her mum. I couldn’t help but listen in. Everything she went through as a child no child, whether werewolf or human, should ever experience what Leah went through. I could feel Lynx agree in my head as anger filled our veins. My heart went out to Leah. She had every right to be angry, but with how Jenny acted, this would end badly for both her and me. I waited for a while, but after a few moments, the door swung open, and out walked Jenny, who clearly was upset. I looked at the nurse, who stared at me. I could feel her eyes on me the entire time. “How is she?” I asked, clearing my throat and taking a step toward her. I knew I couldn’t go in just yet, not when she was awake. She doesn’t even know me. The nurse smiled. “She’s doing well, considering Alpha,” she said, her eyes on my mate’s door. “Her headaches are more for concern, but when she has to deal with stress, it seems to get worse.” The nurse looked at me and gave me a small smile. “I think her mother is pushing her too much,” she said, but her cheeks blushed slightly. “I didn’t mean to be outspoken,” she said, her eyes going back to the door, “I heard everything that was said, and I think her daughter needs a chance to get over everything. She has not long lost her father and now moving to a new place, especially when she doesn’t even know about werewolves.” She was right about that; she knew nothing about our kind. “I think the same,” I whispered, making the nurse look at me wide-eyed. “I believe Leah needs a chance to rest and heal from everything, but her mother is the only family she has left.” The nurse frowned. “I believe her friends offered to take her in,” she said but regretted speaking up. Lynx frowned. “They did,” I said, turning my head to look at Leah’s door. I listened in, and there was no sound, only soft snores. She had fallen asleep. “I will have a word with Jenny,” I said, turning back to the nurse with a smile. The nurse nodded. I turned to leave and walked over to Leah’s door. I pushed the door open and looked, and my mate was sound asleep. I stepped inside, making sure the door closed quietly behind me. I walked over to the side and stared at her. Leah was gorgeous; her hair was everywhere, but what did you expect when she was lying around in a hospital bed? I placed my hand in hers, and tingles ignited through me, making my body heat up. I looked at her hand; it was tiny in mine. Lynx moved but let out a whine. “Mate,” he said. “I know,” I said softly. I stayed like that for a few moments but needed to go. I didn’t want her to see me; we were strangers, after all. I let her hand go and stepped away, walking toward the door. Only to stop and look back once my hand was on the door handle. I looked over my shoulder and sighed. I needed her. I stepped out and glanced toward the nurse’s station, where the nurse from moments ago was staring. I walked over to her and smiled. “Mind link me if there is any trouble,” I said, “I know Jenny thinks she knows best, but let me know what’s going on. Any little detail.” The nurse smiled and nodded. I walked away and headed out of the hospital. I headed over to the pack house and straight to the office. I greeted everyone with a smile, even though my heart was heavy. I know I have to tell the pack I have found my mate, but it will have to wait until Leah knows who I am and what is happening around here. I entered the office, only to find Zain sitting at my desk. He looked over his shoulder and smiled. “How is she?” he asked. “Awake,” I said, walking over to my desk and sat down. Zain nodded. “When are you going to talk to her?” he asked. I couldn’t help but frown. “Well, hopefully soon,” I said, “The only problem seems to be Jenny and Leah argued about the whole situation about her moving in with her.” Zain stared at me, but he didn’t say anything. “I overheard some of the conversation,” I said, staring at him. “Leah hates Jenny.” “She has a good reason too,” he said flatly. “She abandoned her when she was eight. For a child, who clearly loved her parents, she needed her.” I stared at him as he looked back at me, cocking his head. “Do you think there will be issues when she leaves?” he asked. I nodded. “Jenny is pushing her,” I said, “If she doesn’t back down slightly, she will lose her. Leah needs to process everything.” Zain nodded. “That’s true,” he said, looking at me. “She only lost her father a few days ago and moved her against her will too; this has to be a lot for her to take in.” I sighed. “We need to keep extra eyes on the situation,” I said, “I have already got a nurse to let me know what is going on and if there are any issues with Jenny.” Zain gave a nod, but his mind was somewhere else. “What are you thinking?” I asked. Zain looked at me and sighed. “I was just thinking it would be better if she stayed here,” he said, “But as she doesn’t know anything about our kind, that be a bad call to make.” The thought of Leah being here sets my heart racing. I would get to see her every day. I looked at Zain, who gave me a knowing look. “You agree,” he said. “I do,” I said, leaning back in my chair, “But we will have to wait and see what happens as I have a funny feeling that I might have to step in if things get out of sorts.” Zain nodded. I sighed. “Any news around the border?” I asked. A guard mind linked me earlier to tell me that he had scented some rogues close to the south side, but no one was around. I sent Zain to check it out when I went to see Leah. Zain looked at me and frowned. “There was a weak scent of rogues on the south side like the guard had said,” Zain said and leaned back into his chair, “but it was faint; there was no way of knowing whether they were passing by or staking out the pack. We will have to wait.” I frowned. I was not too fond of the sound of that. Rogues have never been an issue before, but we have had a few over the last three months come by, either looking or passing. It took time to tell whether they were good or bad. I don’t like rogues, but if they pass through and don’t show any harm, I leave them alone. Why start something that doesn’t need to start at all? I sighed. “I found some information about Leah,” Zain said, making me look at him confused. “What do you mean?” I asked. Zain laughed. “Well, I did tell you I would look into her socials and see if I can find anything about her,” he said, moving up out of his chair. He stood up and stepped closer to my desk. Zain looked through some files on my desk, pulled out a blue folder, and handed it to me. “Here,” he said. I took the file and scanned over a few pages, my eyes glued to some of the photos he had printed out of her. I looked up at him. Zain stood and smiled. “I found photos of her at the school she used to attend,” he said, “she is well into sports and likes to keep fit. She has many friends, and there are loads of photos of her and her father on there.” I nodded as my eyes went back to the folder. I could feel Lynx move closer to look at the photos and howled in my head when we scanned over a photo of her. “Carson,” Zain said, pulling me away, and our eyes met. He grinned. “I am happy for you and Lynx,” he said. I smiled. “I will make sure no one bothers you for a while,” he said, “read through what I found, and maybe tomorrow or in a few days, we can plan on how you will meet her.” I nodded. The thought of meeting Leah made my heart burst, and excitement ran through me. Lynx agreed and wanted to return there but knew we had to wait. I don’t know how long I can wait till we see her, but I hope it is soon.
