Chapter 26

I stared at her as she walked back into the house.  This is what the last few days have been like.  I have been waiting here, trying to get a glimpse of her.  Lynx was on edge most of the time, and whenever he went for a run, this was the place we would end up staying for hours.  I sighed as I listened to the strained conversation between Leah and her mum as she walked to her room.  I sighed and moved away from where I was hiding.  I turned around and headed back to the pack house.  “Mate,” Lynx whined in my head. He hated being so far away. He wanted to be close enough to see her.  It was hard on both of us.  These last few days have been slow. I kept busy with everything I could find; even training seemed to drag too.  Lynx and I have been standing outside her house, watching her, except for last night. There was some drama with two she-wolves sleeping with the same man, who seemed to want to kill each other.  I had to step in, which resulted in both being sent to the cells.  I walked toward the pack house and found Zain waiting for me.  “You need a hobby,” he muttered as I walked toward him.  I frowned.  “When you get your mate, and she’s human,” I muttered. “I will stand by and watch you do the same thing.”  Zain said nothing as we walked into the pack house and headed to the office.  We stepped into the office.  I walked over to the desk and sat down as Zain sighed and took the chair before me.  “I still can’t figure out what the old gamma is up to,” he muttered, making me look at him as he continued. “He keeps to himself mainly for the last three days.”  I sighed.  Zain has been monitoring the old gamma and Leah’s grandfather, but nothing has happened.  I watched Paul. All he seems to do is spend time with his mate. I had posted a guard to monitor him today, as I wanted to see Leah.  I sighed.  “She actually sat outside early,” I said, looking at Zain.  Zain arched his eyebrow.  “Did she go anywhere…” he said, but I cut him off.  “She just sat on the top step, looking toward the forest,” I muttered.  Zain frowned.  “And you didn’t go to talk to her?” he asked.  I shook my head.  “I was thinking about it,” I said. “But I didn’t want to seem like a stalker.”  Zain laughed.  “You are one,” he said. 1 I grunted as Lynx chuckled.  I ignored them and looked at my desk.  The paperwork was piling up and needed doing.  “We need to do some work,” I muttered to Zain, making him groan.  I handed some papers to him, and we worked on what we needed to do.  After three hours, Zain mind linked for food to come to the office. We ate and had another chat, but I made sure it was all about him.  It felt like we were always talking about Leah and me, and it wasn’t fair to him to go through all this.  After food, we went back to the last load of paperwork.  I leaned back in my chair and looked at the clock, which read seven pm.  Fuck.  Lynx yawned in my head. He fell asleep as soon as he heard the word paperwork.  We were nearly done with it.  Zain moved and stretched his arms as he yawned.  “I hate paperwork,” he muttered, placing his arms down and staring at me.  I nodded.  “It needed to be done,” I said, placing the last sheet of paper on the pile we did.  I was about to say something when a mind link came through. It was from the guard I left at Paul’s house.  “Alpha,” he said, “You asked me to notify you when there was movement or something.”  “Yes,” I said. “What is it?”  “Jenny’s friend just dropped the boys to them,” he said.  That’s odd.  Josh never told me that the boys were going there.  Josh and Jenny told me that Jenny’s friend would watch them until Leah was ready.  They know not to have her grandparents at the house.  Something was off.  “What else?” I asked, trying to get back to the guard.  I could feel Lynx move, but I had to ignore him.  “Well,” he said. “Once Jenny’s friend left, Paul and his mate left the house with the children.”  What?  “I have been following them,” he said and sighed.  “Alpha,” he said. “They’re at Jenny’s house.”  I felt my anger ripple through me.  That jackass was pushing my buttons. He knew what I said, and he hadn’t listened.  “Can you tell if Jenny knows about this?” I asked the guard.  The guard is quiet for a few moments but comes back.  “She looks shocked, alpha,” he said. “So does Josh.”  “Stay there,” I said. “I will be there. Do not go in there. There is a human in that house.”  “A human, alpha,” the guard said, sounding shocked. “There was no word about a human on the pack grounds.”  I sighed.  “I know,” I said. “I was going to have a word with Jenny about it. I was going to make an announcement later this evening.”  “I will stay here till you come here,” he said.  I closed the mind link and looked back at Zain, who looked at me curiously.  “What?” he asked.  I told him everything that the guard had told me.  Zain growled.  “What the hell is he playing at?” he said, bolting up to his feet.  I moved up from my chair and headed to the door, with Zain following me.  “We need to get there,” I said. “If anything happens, I will kill him.”  Lynx was up on all paws and ready to kill. We moved fast out of the pack house as the rain started.  The rain was one for this pack if there was ever a bad sign.  We moved as fast as possible and got to where the guard waited for us.  “What’s going…” I said, but I heard shouting.  It was my mate.  What the hell was going on in there?  Lynx growled.  I was about to listen in when the door flew open, and our mate ran out and straight into the forest.  I watched her run away.  My eyes returned to the house, where Josh was running toward me. Jenny was shouting at her parents, and the boys stood there crying.  “Carson,” Josh shouted. “You need to go after her.”  I said nothing and let Lynx take over.  I opened a mind link to Zain as Lynx bolted toward where Leah ran off to.  “Get Paul in the cells,” I growled. “I will deal with him when I return, and no visitors, especially the old gamma. Get the guard to stay with Josh and Jenny till I get her.”  “I got this,” Zain said. “Get your mate.” He closed the mind link, and I looked through Lynx’s eyes.  Where the hell was she?  Fuck, she was fast for a human.  Lynx sniffed the air, but the rain was clouding his senses.  “Take it slow,” I muttered. “She is around here somewhere. We will find her.”  Lynx nodded but kept looking and walked.  We needed to get to her. This forest was not the safest, especially for a human who didn’t know about werewolves.  Lynx kept walking but stopped when seeing footprints on the ground and followed them.  We needed to get to her and fast.
