Chapter 9

I looked ahead and stared at Zain as I listened to Julian on the phone. “Okay,” I said. “Make sure you are back by the weekend.” 1 I hung up the phone and looked at my Beta.  “Jenny and Josh are on their way back now,” I said. “It seems the human had some sort of outburst which made her collapse, so the ambulance is bringing her to the pack hospital.”  Zain nodded but frowned. “What happened?” he asked. 1 I sighed.  “It seems they interrupted the funeral, and Julian being Julian opened his big mouth,” I said. “The girl was frantic but also guessed that her mum left her father for Josh.” 2 Zain stared at me, shocked.  “How the hell did she work it out?” he asked.  “I have no clue; neither do Jenny and Julian,” I said. 1 Zain sighed.  “Poor thing,” he said. “She has had a lot to deal with over the last few days.”  I nodded.  I couldn’t help but agree with him.  I looked at the clock and sighed.  “We got training,” I said.  Zain nodded.  Zain and I both moved from the chairs and left the office.  We have training every day.  After Jenny and Julian returned from the human town, the next day, rogues entered the pack grounds and attacked. 1 The rogues were dealt with; there were only ten that came through. There were no casualties, which was good. Something about the attack had me on edge; it was random. The rogues looked like they were looking for something or someone.  I placed the pack on a strict lockdown routine.  I remember Julian running in, asking for permission for Jenny, Josh, and him to get Leah. I was initially hesitant, but he stated that the girl and a woman lied to them when she was supposed to finish school, but it seemed that the girl had already completed schooling. I thought about it and agreed. Knowing that all my pack members would be safe in a lockdown kept me and Lynx calm.  I was out of sorts until I heard Julian tell me the plan. Julian is part of the pack but is a lawyer first. We work with a witch who has given him a potion to cover his scent. He took some with him for the others, just in case. I had them leave last night to get there today, but I didn’t realize it would be the father’s funeral.  Zain and I walked toward the pack training ground; everyone was there. I knew I had banned anyone from leaving the pack, so I knew everyone was here except Josh and Jenny.  I nodded toward the trainer to get started while Zain and I watched.  We usually train with everyone, but I wanted to keep an eye on people to make sure they were following.  I could feel eyes on me and look at a she-wolf who had a smirk on her face.  I frowned.  I looked over to Zain, who was smirking. “Dude,” I said. “She’s supposed to be training. Organize your sexual activity afterward.”  Zain sighed. “You definitely need some,” he said. “I was organizing a little get-together with her and her friend, Rachel.”  I growled.  “Fuck, no,” I said. “I am not fucking any she-wolves.”  Zain held his hands up in surrender. “Sorry,” he muttered. “I didn’t mean to..” he was cut off by the sound of sirens coming onto the pack grounds.  I looked over and noticed the ambulance pull up to the pack hospital.  Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared.  I growled.  “Get back to training,” I yelled. “There is nothing for you to see.”  Everyone went back to training.  I looked over to Zain, “Come on,” I said. “Jenny and Josh just pulled up too. We need to make sure everyone is okay.”  Zain nodded, and we both walked away.  As we approached the ambulance, Lynx was on high alert and pacing.  “What’s wrong?” I asked him, but he ignored me.  Great, he is acting weird again.  I walked into the hospital and noticed Jenny standing with a doctor looking frightened. “I need to see her,” she pleaded.  I walked up to them. “What’s going on?” I asked.  The door to the room opened, and the scent that wafted out hit me like a ton of bricks; it smelt intoxicating, smothering me. It smelt of lavender.  The doctor was talking, but I didn’t hear a thing. My eyes were glued to the door.  Lynx growled, which made me shake my head.  “What did you just say?” I asked the doctor.  The doctor looked at me and sighed.  “It seems she suffered a head injury when she had the accident,” he said. “I placed her in an induced coma for now as she was screaming in pain.”  I nodded.  “What happens now?” I asked, looking toward the door.  “We are going to give her some scans, and we can decide from there,” he said.  “Okay,” Jenny whispered.  I glanced back at her, but her eyes were on the door I was staring at moments ago.  “They won’t let me see her,” she said with a whimper, not looking at me.  “Sweetheart,” shouted Josh. “Mummy,” called Alec and Ethan.  Jenny shook her head, and tears started to flow.  Josh came up to her and comforted his mate while I was trying to figure out what the hell had happened to me moments again.  I looked back at Lynx, who had a worried face. “What’s wrong?” I asked. He was about to say something, but the scent cut us off. 1 I looked back and stared as two nurses were pushing out a bed. There in the bed was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen; she looked like an angel.  “Mate,” shouted Lynx.  I looked back at him, shocked.  “Mate,” he yelled.  I looked toward the bed as the nurses wheeled her away.  Her face was pale, but she looked familiar to me.  I watched as they turned the corner.  “Mate,” I whispered.  There was a gasp, but I stared at the bed.  “What did you say?” asked Jenny.  I licked my lips, ignoring her. I looked back to the corner, where they wheeled her away.  I cleared my throat. “Mate,” I said.  I looked back at Jenny; she walked toward me and searched my face. “You sure,” she said, scanning my face.  I nodded with a frown.  “Yes,” I said. “Lynx called mate when she was wheeled out.”  I stared at Jenny, but her face fell.  “NO, NO, NO,” she said as she stepped back and looked at me, shaking her head. “She’s my daughter; I just got her back.” 2 I looked at her. Her daughter?  Then it hit me; her daughter was in the ambulance. Her scent was in there, and when Jenny returned home the other day, she must have gotten her scent on her.  That explains why Lynx was acting weird.  “Alpha Carson,” Josh said as he pulled me back from my thoughts.  I stared at him.  “Alpha,” he said. “You may have to wait awhile; she was in a pissed-off mood when she wakes as she doesn’t even know she is here yet, and not only that, she and Jenny have to get on track.”  I frowned.  Josh placed his hand on my shoulder and stared at me. “She’s your mate; I get it,” he said. “But she doesn’t know anything about us, and not only that, she just lost her father. She will be a mess. You must give her some time, and you must do it the human way first.”  Lynx groaned but didn’t move. I knew he wanted to see her, but we had to wait.  I looked toward Jenny, who was sitting down on a chair, sobbing, and being comforted by a nurse. 1 I sighed.  “I know,” I said. “I will keep my distance and wait till things have settled.”  Jenny looked up and gave me a knowing smile.  I felt for her, but this was going to be hard, especially with Lynx.  I walked over to Jenny and sat next to her.  Everyone took seats around the waiting room.  I leaned back and rested my head on the wall.  “She will be fine,” whispered Jenny. I turned to look at her. Her eyes met mine. “She was mad that I wasn’t giving her the month with her friend,” she said and looked down. “She was mad at me anyway; she may not want anything to do with me.”  I placed my hand on hers and smiled.  “She will be fine,” I said. “As for the other stuff, didn’t you tell me once that everything takes time to heal.”  Jenny stared at me and nodded. A small smile slid across her lips. “You remembered,” she said.  I nodded.  After my father died, I was in a mess and ran into the forest to escape. Everyone searched for me; Jenny found me by the lake and sat with me. She never called anyone to tell them where I was. Jenny listened as I cried and rumbled on about losing my dad. But something hit me; at the time, Jenny looked like she had lost someone close to her, and now thinking about it, she lost her daughter.  Jenny took me back, and Josh helped me with the pack. But after that night, Jenny left the pack to go back. No one understood why she did, but now every made perfect sense. 1 Jenny wiped her eyes and looked toward the hospital entrance; her eyes widened. I looked to where she was looking, and there stood her parents.  “Mum,” she whispered. “Dad.”  They looked around, and their eyes landed on me. They bowed. “Alpha,” they said together.  I nodded but didn’t say anything.  I watched as Jenny’s mum walked up and placed her hand in hers. “I’m sorry, Jen,” she whispered. “Is she okay?”  Jenny didn’t say anything; she shrugged.  Josh explained everything to them. Jenny’s mum sat next to her on the other side while her father was leaning against the wall; his face was neutral, but something was there. He looked concerned, but something else was there. Even Lynx couldn’t work out what.  We all sat around, but Zain looked at me. “I told all training will commence at the same time every day now,” he said and looked to the corner, then back to me.  I knew he wanted to discuss what he heard. I opened a mind link to him.  “She’s my mate,” I told him. He kept his face blank. “I’m going to need your help with her. I have no idea what the hell I need to do.” 1 “I will,” he said. “I will go to the office and get some paperwork done there. I might have a little snoop at what Julian has given us and find some things out about her.”  I stared at him, but he frowned. “I mean, I will find out what she likes and what she does for fun,” he said.  “Okay,” I said. “Keep this between us; I will have difficulty claiming her as it is.”  Zain nodded and shut the link down.  I was back to the silence.  Everyone was worried about her, but what would have caused all this?
