In all their years of teaching, none of the professors had seen a student like this. She was a real prodigy.
Everyone’s eyes darted around the room, searching, until they finally landed on a girl standing up slowly from the corner.
Charlotte stood in front of her seat, her lips pressed together in a calm line. Her eyebrows were slightly raised, and her face was so striking it was almost hard to look away. She didn’t bother with small talk or fake smiles. She just stood there, perfectly composed and a little distant.
The teachers, who were cool and collected a moment ago, all looked stunned. None of them had pictured the nation’s top student like this. No one expected her to look so gorgeous, or to have this air of effortless confidence. She was nothing like the typical overworked, sleep-deprived bookworm they’d imagined.
“Hello, professors. My name is Charlotte.”
Her voice was soft and polite, her introduction simple and straight to the point.
That quiet tone pulled the admissions teachers out of their daze.
“Charlotte, have you thought about coming to our university?” The Harmony Normal University teacher jumped in right away, sounding almost desperate. “If you join us, you can pick any major you want.”
Charlotte blinked, clearly surprised.
Wasn’t she supposed to be grilled about her accomplishments first? Not that she really had any to show off.
“Eaton, you’re not following protocol,” the teacher from Solace University of Medicine muttered, unable to hide his annoyance. He quickly turned to Charlotte, worried someone else would snatch her away. “Have you ever considered studying medicine? If you come to our school, you’ll get the best faculty in the country. We’ll even have Dr. Edison personally mentor you. With our help, you’re guaranteed to become an outstanding doctor.”
Graduates from Solace University of Medicine were always snapped up by top hospitals. Job hunting was never an issue for them.
Charlotte just stood there, silent.
Dr. Edison would probably have to call her teacher, she thought.
Not wanting to miss their chance, teachers from other universities began joining in.
A teacher from Horizon Institute of Engineering said, “Charlotte, if you choose our school, we’ll cover all your tuition room, and board our best professors will personally guide you.”
A teacher from Apex Polytechnic University chimed in, “Our university is great too. Whatever the other schools are offering, we can match it. Please consider us.”
They were practically begging.
As all the teachers circled around Charlotte, Olivia, sitting in the front row, bit her lip in frustration.
The representative from The Cabinda University hadn’t said a word.
Olivia figured it was because Charlotte’s literature score was so low. Maybe they were still deciding if she was worth it.
Just then, the vice-chancellor from The Cabinda University, who had looked so serious a moment ago, broke into a rare smile. “Everyone’s talking about their schools. I’d like to ask Charlotte a question.”
He held up her report card. “You scored perfect marks in every subject except
literature. Why did you only get 120 in that? It’s a pretty odd gap.”
Everyone in the room turned to look at Charlotte, curious.
Olivia stretched her neck, a proud smile on her face. The Cabinda University had never accepted anyone with a literature score below 130. There was no way they’d make an exception now.
Charlotte just smiled, a little bit of amusement flickering in her eyes. “Oh, literature?
My pen ran out of ink halfway through the essay, so I lost thirty points.”
The room went silent. Professors and students alike stared at her, completely stunned.
