Chapter 521
The connection between the two families was Melissa’s parents’ last, desperate hope.
Normally, Patricia was fair and gentle, not someone who would really go after Melissa. “Fine. Let her off this once,” she said.
Charlotte’s eyes flicked to Patricia’s face. She pressed her lips together and stayed quiet. Her grandmother had already been more than generous. If this was about saving face for both families, and that meant letting Melissa go this time, Charlotte had no complaints.
“Really?” Selena’s relief was instant. She practically bounced as she blurted, “Patricia, thank you, thank you!”
But before anyone could really celebrate, Patricia kept going. “Anthony, tell Lottie’s lawyer that, because of our families, we’ll change the sentence from death to life in prison.”
“Patricia!” The words landed like a slap. Melissa’s parents froze, their smiles evaporating as panic took over. Patricia’s idea of “letting Melissa off” just meant she’d spend her life behind bars instead of facing the death penalty.
All their begging had gotten them nowhere. Patricia was still set on making Melissa pay for the rest of her life.
Anthony gave a calm nod and squeezed Charlotte’s hand, a small smile tugging at his lips.
Charlotte looked at him, her own lips finally easing into a gentle smile. Grandma really knew how to play this game.
“Patricia, you can’t do this-” Melissa’s parents were frantic now, jumping to their feet.
“If you do this, you’re cutting all ties between our families! If Gavin finds out, he’ll Selena started ranting, her words tumbling out in panic.
“Let them be cut,” Patricia replied coolly, her voice sharp as ice. “With the way you’ve raised your daughter, your family doesn’t deserve to be friends with us.”
“And as for Gavin Patricia’s smile turned wicked. “I don’t care. Even if the ancestors of the Blair family had something to say, they could crawl out of their graves and argue with me themselves.”
Melissa’s parents were stunned into silence. The servants stood by, wide-eyed.
“I’ve said everything I need to say. If someone’s done wrong, they deserve to be punished. The law will handle the rest,” Patricia finished, her voice strong and unwavering. She slapped her palm on the table. “Someone, show them out.”
“Patricia!” Realizing there was no hope left, Selena snapped. She pointed at Charlotte, her voice laced with spite. Do you all know Charlotte was almost raped as a child? Who knows if she’s even… clean anymore?”
“And she was in a mental hospital! It wasn’t just a small thing, either. You
really want someone like that inv family? Aren’t you afraid of what people will say? Ow-”
Before she could finish, a porcelain teacup flew through the air and hit her right in the face.
Everyone turned. Anthony was sitting there, calm and collected, legs crossed, lips pressed tight. There was something dangerous about the way he looked at them. “Looks like Melissa’s mess wasn’t enough of a lesson for you. You still don’t get it. There are people you just can’t mess with,” Anthony said coldly.
He nudged the big dog lying at Charlotte’s feet. The dog instantly jumped up.
“Woof woof
Melissa’s parents barely had time to react before a huge dog came barreling toward them.
“Ah, Freddy!” Selena shrieked, grabbing her husband as they scrambled around the living room, totally panicked.
Everyone else watched, faces cold and unmoved.
“98K!” Anthony finally called the dog off, once the couple had collapsed, pale and shaking. He took out his phone, ready to make a call to hit the Carter Group where it hurt. But
before he could djal, Freddy’sphone rang.
“What? The company’s under attack?”
The news caught everyone off guard. Anthony’s eyes narrowed, something
unreadable flickering across his face.
