Charlotte pulled the blanket up over Stella, her tone cool as she smiled. “If they’re not afraid of dying, let them come at me.”
It was the perfect chance to settle every old and new grudge at once.
Stella nodded hard, scooting closer until her head rested against Charlotte. She closed her eyes, finally at peace.
Charlotte glanced down at her, and her expression softened for a second before going cold again.
She could never forget the first time she met Stella.
Back then, Stella was twelve, barely fifty pounds, her body marked with scars, legs so thin they looked ready to snap.
She’d been curled up in a corner, tiny and trembling, too scared to even look up.
At the time, Charlotte never imagined she’d meet anyone who’d had it worse than she did.
What shocked her most was that this fragile girl would later risk her own life for Charlotte and the other kids.
That was why Charlotte refused to let anyone hurt Stella.
Once Stella was asleep, Charlotte grabbed her phone and shot Jackson a quick text.

The next morning, sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, washing the big bed in a golden glow.
Charlotte was still buried under the covers when her phone started ringing nonstop by the pillow.
She frowned, half annoyed, and reached for her phone. As soon as she saw the caller ID, her whole attitude changed.
“Grandpa.”
“Lottie,” Robert’s voice sounded lighter than usual. “Come home for dinner tonight. Samantha cooked a bunch of your favorites.”
Samantha?
Samantha was the definition of a powerhouse executive. She never set foot in the kitchen, let alone cooked a meal.
Kevin always joked, “Samantha treats you better than she treats me.”
Charlotte couldn’t find a reason to say no, so she agreed without hesitation.
But before she could say anything else, Robert kept going.

Charlotte’s heart did a weird little jump. She just knew something was up.
“I’m planning to invite Kenneth’s

She was still frowning at her phone when a message popped up from Anthony.

She pressed her lips together, thinking, but then another text arrived.
