Charlotte hadn’t really gone all out during the match, but anyone watching could tell she wasn’t just talented. She had some serious training behind her.
When she heard what they said, Charlotte just smiled. If The White Whale hadn’t done so much good protecting the country, she would have taken them down herself ages ago for acting like a bunch of thugs.
Donald caught that hint of a smile on her face, and for a second his heart thudded hard in his chest. At first, it was just her figure that seemed familiar. Now, looking at her face, he realized he’d definitely seen her somewhere before.
“So, have you made up your mind?” Cotton asked, almost bouncing with excitement as he looked at Charlotte. “You know, you’d be the first woman L has ever personally invited to join the squad. Most people can only dream of this kind of honor.”
What could she possibly be hesitating about?
Charlotte lifted her eyes and said, “I’m not interested.”
The words kind of hung in the air. Donald just stared in silence. Cotton’s mouth fell open in shock.
She actually said she didn’t want to join The White Whale. This was a first. It deserved a spot in the unit’s record books, though maybe not one they’d be proud of.
Donald tried again, “What if I trained you myself once you joined?” He clasped his hands behind his back and bent forward a little, his eyes serious as he looked at her.
No one had ever made an offer like this before.
Charlotte pressed her lips together, her eyes shining as she met his gaze.
Donald kept going, “If you have any conditions, just tell me.”
She was obviously talented, and he liked her attitude. It’d be a real shame to let her
go.
“Alright,” Charlotte said, lifting her
chin. Her eyes sparkled with a cold, confident light as she smiled at him. “If you want me that badly, beat me ina match. Then yoin The White Whale.”
Cotton blinked, thinking he must have heard wrong. Did she just say he had to beat her?
Was she really challenging Donald? Did she think she was unbeatable just because she’d taken down the national kickboxing champ young people just hadn’t been knocked around by life enough yet.
“Nonsense,” Cotton snapped. If they actually fought, Donald could knock her out with one punch.
Charlotte shrugged. “What, weren’t you the ones who said I could name my terms?”
Standing next to the two big guys, her slender frame looked even smaller, but she didn’t seem bothered at all.
“If you don’t agree, I’ll just leave,” she said, turning on her heel.
“Hold on.” Donald narrowed his eyes, suddenly finding her pretty interesting. “If I win, you’ll really join The White Whale?”
“I always keep my word.”
“Alright.” Donald nodded, then turned to Cotton. “Go grab a few new recruits from the team and bring them over.”
She needed to be taught a lesson. Consider it her first day of training.
Charlotte pressed her lips together, feeling a little insulted, then looked night at Cotton. No need for all that. You’ll do, Cotton.”
“Me?” Cotton frowned. “How am I supposed to fight a little girl? Not happening.”
